The Grotto Project
6th June – 12th July 2015
The Grotto Project is a collaborative project and sculpture inspired by the way in which we romanticise the past. Artist Lucy Harvey is working with local residents to gather together historic objects and stories from around Sale to create an artwork in Town Square this July as part of Sale Arts Trail 2015.
The Project explores our relationship with objects and the way that we use them to represent stories and ideas about our lives. Members of the public, pupils from Sale Grammar School, and families from Sale West are helping to collect old ceramic and glassware to create stories about the people who may have owned them.
The Grotto sculpture will draw these objects and stories together with inspiration from museum displays and dioramas, still life painting, and archaeology to create an immersive installation. The Grotto presents an alternative history of Sale and the people who once lived here, created by the people who live here today.
The Grotto Project is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England; and with kind support from Sale Locality Partnership with funding from Make Sale Smile.
The Grotto Project is part of Sale Art Trail 2015, 10th-12th July 2015, an annual open studio event of Trafford artists and makers.
